I'm looking forward to mini vacation in January?

I live in Dallas, and we are trying to leave small vacation in January, but also inexpensive. I mean really cheap. We'd go to a place with a cooler climate, but would like some suggestions. Remember cheap.

First, plan to drive. Depends what you like and how long you want to stay out. You could make a loop tour if you do not mind the time of the windshield. Stay away fast food (too expensive) and eat out of the cooler. In this time of year are low-cost motel. Stay away from the hotels in big cities and stay in small towns. Consider that New Mexico is different from southern Arizona. The entire state of New Mexico is above 3000 and ABQ is about the same as the elevation of Denver. If you go north, consider the Black Hills of SD, but be prepared for a snowstorm.
