How 2 weeks vacation to Washington, DC, for Christmas and New Year. Advice on planning the trip.?

I'm going to visit my friend who lives with her 2-year-old son for Christmas and New Year. It is a journey of 2 weeks and had never made a single trip and the last time I traveled was about 8 years. Do you have any advice for trip planning, such as How soon should I book my flight, which should be taken to ensure the ideas on what to do, etc? Any and all help is muchly appreciated!

You absolutely must book the flight immediately. That is the travel time is the busiest. You can get many responses from a local travel agent or your friend.
